The Marathon Year for Me Is Over

by Todd Karpinski, ICHP President
September 23, 2010

And what a year it has been. I have been so honored and humbled over the past year to serve as the President of this great organization. I want to send my true thanks to Scott Meyers, who has helped guide my year, and all of the staff at ICHP, the Executive Council and the Board members for their hard work and dedication this past year. The volunteers in this organization have once again had an extremely busy and productive year. The strength of ICHP comes from the sacrifice and commitment of members; I truly appreciate all of your efforts.

By the time this article is published in KeePosted, I will have given my Presidential report to the House of Delegates at the ICHP Annual Meeting. In this report I focus on three primary accomplishments over the past year that will make our organization stronger for the years to come.

The year started at the Leadership retreat in Allerton, Illinois. The focus for this year’s retreat was to update the ICHP strategic plan. Each Division Director reviewed the existing strategic plan and made recommendations for items that needed to be removed or added to the strategic plan. A subcommittee will be formed and led by the incoming ICHP President, Carrie Sincak, to formalize the new plan that will guide the organization for the next 2-3 years.

The difficult economic conditions continued to impact the country over the last 12 months. ICHP has not been exempt from the fallout. The building that houses the ICHP office has been unable to find suitable tenants for open spaces. The loss of rental revenue led the Executive Committee, under the insightful direction of Mike Weaver, to take steps to improve our position with the financing of the building in hopes to minimize the financial impact to the organization.

Finally, the ICHP Board of Directors made a critical decision to discontinue the organization’s management of the Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists. While this relationship has existed for quite some time and has been beneficial to both organizations, the Board determined that our focus should be the further development of ICHP. The staff at ICHP can now focus on new initiatives that will ensure the long-term success of our organization.

I want to again thank all of the Board members and ICHP staff for their support and efforts over the past year. I have truly enjoyed working with each and every one of you to help support the organization and the profession of pharmacy. I will never forget and will always be humbled by this experience. The organization will be in great hands next year under the leadership of Carrie. I wish her the best of luck!
