ICHP Position Statement - Training, Certification and Employment of Pharmacy Technicians

The Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) supports efforts to foster the development and availability of quality education and training programs for pharmacy technicians.  In addition, ICHP supports:

  • The incorporation of goals and educational objectives identified in the national Model Curriculum for Pharmacy Technician Training into these programs (See link below)
  • Completion of an ASHP/ACPE-accredited pharmacy technician training program as a prerequisite for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination
  • Expanding the number of ASHP/ACPE-accredited pharmacy technician training programs in Illinois
  • The state-wide development of associate degree programs for pharmacy technician education
  • The establishment and application, by employers, of education and training requirements in the hiring and promotion of pharmacy technicians
  • The provision of quality continuing pharmacy education programs for pharmacy technicians

In addition, ICHP recognizes the need for a standardized measure of the skill, knowledge, and experience level of technicians and, therefore, supports the requirement that pharmacy technicians practicing in all healthcare settings be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, Inc.  ICHP encourages pharmacy technicians to complete additional certificate programs (offered by PTCB or other entities) in areas consistent with their practice and if appropriate obtain PTCB's Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) credential.  Finally, ICHP encourages employers to recognize the successful completion of these Certificate programs as a means for career advancement.
